Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time has slowly built its reputation as one of the most influential works of 20th-century French literature. The overwhelming tide of Proustian criticism started in the 70s has transformed this novel into a monument under whose shadow writers have long strived to find their place. The Abbé Mugnier said of Proust, after his death, “nul n’est moins mort que lui”. Indeed, Proust has been a haunting presence—a real literary revenant—for many writers of the 20th and 21st century.
